About BLOCK33
In an environment with multiple community centers, BLOCK33 adds something different. It is not a place with a fixed program, but a place where different worlds come together. Residents, entrepreneurs, the municipality, housing corporations, and parties from outside the neighborhood meet here. At the same time, these external parties bring knowledge, networks, and resources inside, ensuring that the neighborhood does not remain isolated but becomes connected to a broader reality.
That creates a different dynamic. People come not only to participate, but also to build something. Residents grow with how the place operates, gain insight into how things are organized, and can take on a role in it themselves. This creates not only a sense of belonging to the place, but also greater confidence and agency in one's own life.
The foundation of this way of working is reciprocity. BLOCK33 functions as an ecosystem in which giving and receiving are in balance. Everyone who enters contributes something — time, knowledge, energy, or initiative. This creates a place that is not dependent on a single party, but is supported by a network of people and organizations.
As a neighborhood hub, BLOCK33 also functions as a neighborhood collective building: comparable to a multi-tenant office building, but with a clear social component. It is a place where meeting and development come together, and where people are given the space to build something in their own way. As an organization, BLOCK33 is a social enterprise, where commercial revenues are used to enable social activities.
The role of BLOCK33 extends beyond the building itself. Internally, we connect people and initiatives, but externally, we also play an active role in the neighborhood. Activities such as the Neighborhood Fest demonstrate how we, as a venue, can organize collaborations and bring the community together. In this context, BLOCK33 serves as a home base: a place where ideas are born, partners find each other, and initiatives are advanced. This role has a direct impact on the surrounding area. Particularly on Van Baerlestraat, formerly a less visible street, engagement has noticeably increased. Through our presence and open attitude, contact with residents has been strengthened, and new key figures have joined in. We have gained a better understanding of what is going on, and residents know how to find us more easily. We hear from residents and the community police officer that the presence of BLOCK33 contributes to a more pleasant and safer atmosphere. Not only because the place is open, but because of the energy it brings with it. There is more activity, more contact, and more visibility. The sense that something is happening in the neighborhood — and that you can be part of it — is growing stronger.
By now, BLOCK33 is also seen as a place relevant to broader issues. It functions as a practical environment for research and collaborations around themes such as circularity, movement, health, and social connection. Here, ideas are not only conceived but also tested and further developed. In doing so, BLOCK33 contributes not only to Moerwijk itself but also to insights that have broader applicability.
It is precisely this combination of place, network, and practice that makes BLOCK33 valuable — for the street, the neighborhood, and the district as a whole.
