Each year, around 130 passionate volunteers join the Movies that Matter team to help bring the festival to life. We’d be thrilled to have you join us!

The Movies that Matter Festival will take place from Friday the 20th until Saturday the 28th of March at Theater aan het Spui and Filmhuis Den Haag. The festival showcases feature films, documentaries, and shorts exploring human rights, sustainability, and social issues. It also offers a variety of engaging talks, performances, and Q&A sessions with directors, activists, and experts.

For the preparations and running of the festival, we are looking for helping hands in The Hague and for a few shifts in Amsterdam.

Who are you?

We’re looking for enthusiastic, proactive people who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. An affinity with film and festivals, and prior volunteering experience, is a plus. As you’ll often be the first point of contact for our visitors, we value volunteers who are welcoming, hospitable, and friendly.

You should be available for a minimum of four shifts before and/or during the festival, with the option to take on more if you’d like. Working hours vary by role: day shifts typically start between 09:00 and 11:00, while afternoon/evening shifts usually begin between 16:00 and 18:00. Each shift lasts around six hours.

We offer a variety of roles, and you can select the two positions that suit you best. See all volunteer roles here.

What do we offer?

As a volunteer, you’ll be closely involved in the organisation and gain valuable insight into the inner workings of our unique festival. If you complete a minimum of four shifts (each lasting four hours or more), you’ll receive a Crew Pass, giving you access to screenings at Theater aan het Spui and Filmhuis Den Haag outside your working hours.

You’ll receive a Movies that Matter T-shirt, and your travel expenses can be reimbursed up to €20 per shift (with a valid NS ticket or OV-chipcard statement; parking fees and car mileage are not reimbursed). Accommodation during the festival is your own responsibility. Of course, food and drinks will be provided during your shifts.

Save the date!

Information meeting for all volunteers: Tuesday 10 March 16:30-18:00, The Hague

We will organise an information meeting for all volunteers at Theater aan het Spui in The Hague, and we kindly ask you to attend. During this meeting, you’ll receive all the information you need to be fully prepared for your first shift. It’s also a great opportunity to meet fellow volunteers and get to know the Movies that Matter team.

Getting there

About Movies that Matter

Movies that Matter opens eyes for human rights by film. Moving feature films and revealing documentaries that hold up a mirror to us. Films that start conversations about how we can promote peace and fight injustice. We screen these films in schools, at the annual festival in The Hague and On Tour in film theaters throughout The Netherlands. We also support human rights film screenings abroad.
