📌 Job Title: Head of Social Media

🏢 Department: Social Media

🧭 Location: Remote (The Netherlands)

🕒 Employment Type: Volunteer, 4-8 hours per week

👤 Reports to: Rob

🧠 About Advocates Who Thrive

Across Europe, many people work tirelessly to advance social and environmental justice. This work is deeply meaningful but incredibly demanding. Over time, many face a heavy personal toll: losing energy, struggling to involve others, doubting themselves, or feeling entirely isolated. Far less attention often goes to supporting the actual people behind the change work: the advocates themselves.

Advocates Who Thrive is a learning & development organization dedicated to changing that. Our mission is to strengthen the resilience, confidence, and effectiveness of people who advance social and environmental justice by offering world-class coaching, group learning, and peer support. Our approach is experiential, practical, and human. We help changemakers work directly on their real-life challenges so they can stay emotionally balanced, stand strong against resistance, and communicate in ways that bring their communities along with them.

🎯 Role Overview

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Social Media Team Lead to join our team. In this role, you will lead Advocates Who Thrive’s social media team, overseeing both the people and strategy that amplify our mission.

At AWT, leadership means enabling others to thrive: you will create a supportive environment where volunteers feel empowered to take ownership, grow their skills, and contribute their ideas.

You will be responsible for managing and supporting team members, ensuring content reflects our values, and driving the evolution of our social media presence to grow our reach and impact.

📋 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and support the social media team, acting as the direct line manager: providing guidance, clear instructions, constructive feedback, and support for professional growth.
  • Own and improve AWT’s social media strategy: refine, adapt, and implement it based on lessons learned, analytics, and emerging trends.
  • Ensure all social media content aligns with the broader strategy, brand identity, values, and equity-first approach, maintaining cohesion across platforms.
  • Oversee content planning and production to ensure a balanced, consistent output across all platforms.
  • Facilitate collaboration between the social media team and other AWT teams to ensure cross-pollination of ideas and activities.
  • Monitor performance and report regularly to the director on progress, successes, and opportunities.

🌱 Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong people-centered leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, guide, and empower volunteers to take ownership in a collaborative environment.
  • Clear and compassionate communication skills, with the ability to set expectations, give constructive feedback, and listen actively to team members.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and ownership, comfortable leading a team and ensuring steady and consistent content output.
  • Good understanding of social media trends, content oversight, analytics, and how to adapt a strategy when needed.
  • Passion for social justice, equity, and community-led work
  • Organised and reliable, able to manage tasks, scheduling, and coordination in a remote setting.

📈 Preferred (but not required)

  • Previous experience in a nonprofit or advocacy-based organization
  • Multilingual fluency / intercultural fluency
  • Lived experience related to the communities we serve

💼 What We Offer

  • A supportive and values-aligned team environment
  • Flexibility and autonomy
  • A platform to contribute to meaningful, global impact

🎁 Volunteer Perks

As a token of our appreciation for your dedication, we offer the following:

  • Travel Compensation: Reimbursement for travel expenses related to events or activities conducted on behalf of AWT.
  • Learning & Development: Priority access to internal coaching, training, and development opportunities — plus possible access to partner programs.
  • Monthly Community Meetings: Join us for mission-focused discussions and delicious vegan snacks & drinks with fellow team members.
  • Written Reference: Receive a personalized letter of recommendation to support your future professional or educational pursuits.

📌 What to Expect in the Recruitment Process

We believe in transparency and respect for every candidate’s time. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. CV Screening – We review your background for mission and skills alignment.
  2. One Virtual Interview (with HR & Hiring Manager) – A friendly and focused conversation about your motivation, experience, and alignment with our work.
  3. Feedback – After the process completion, we will send you an email with feedback within 7 business days..

We value every application and ensure a respectful and timely process.

About Advocates Who Thrive

At Advocates Who Thrive we empower current or aspiring advocates to become more influential in their fight for social and environmental justice.

We do so by offering them training and coaching opportunities that build their confidence, capacity and competences to speak up, lobby & campaign for the environment, animal rights, human rights and inclusion.

In order to successfully address these urgent societal challenges, we need all kinds of angles and viewpoints to be on board. That’s where our main activities – the intensive, multi-day training courses that we organize – come in. Where international youth from all kinds of backgrounds come together. The training setup in combination with their passion and collective drive allows them to fully focus on the topic and on each other. As a result, participants develop themselves and each other in ways they never imagined before.

Fully in line with these values, in our organization we welcome and involve youth from all walks of life. No matter their background, religion, education, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation, everyone is welcome to join!
