The Duinweg will be closed with barriers in the evenings during the toad migration period, which must be reopened at 7:00 a.m. from February 15th to the end of March.

Every spring, toads and other amphibians such as frogs and salamanders emerge from hibernation to slowly make their way to ponds. On their journey to the water, they often have to cross busy roads. The Duinweg is closed every year after sunset during the toad migration so the amphibians can cross on their own, without the danger of car or bicycle tires.

We are looking for volunteers to help open the barriers at 7:00 am on a fixed day during the toad migration period.

Getting there

About De Dierenbescherming

One of the most important goals of the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals is to prevent animal suffering, so that we need to rescue fewer animals in the long run. Our "social animal assistance" department therefore focuses – as the name suggests – on social tasks and services.
We are there not only for animals, but also for people. At the societal level, we offer support programs for pet owners who experience problems caring for their animals. And if care providers and service providers encounter animal welfare issues, they can contact our Helpdesk for Caregivers. Furthermore, through our Animal Buddy project, we support the elderly and chronically ill in caring for their pets. This way, animals and people can stay together.
Another example of our preventative work is the annual toad migration campaign. Our volunteers help toads safely cross the road after hibernation.
