Summary

As a board trainee, you work alongside board members to learn required skills and gain experience in managing a non-profit organisation like Leiden Pride.

Detailed description

Are you looking for a closer connection to the queer community? Is meeting new people and expanding your contacts a part of your 2021 resolutions? Would you like to discover some of your hidden talents and further your development while helping others? We would love to have you as a part of our passionate team: attend our meetings, organise interesting events and, of course, help us build and expand the LGBTQI+ platform at the heart of Leiden!

Leiden Pride is a growing non-profit organisation, searching for energetic board and team members to fill a wide variety of vacancies. Open applications are also welcome, if you want to help out but feel like you are not fit within our current vacancies. If you don’t have a lot of time to offer, contact us and we can help you figure out what type of work suits you best. A little help goes a long way!

Purpose: As a board trainee, you work alongside board members to learn required skills and gain experience in managing a non-profit organisation like Leiden Pride.

Location: Meetings online through Slack. Physical headquarters at Plexus, Leiden.

Key responsibilities: As board trainee your main responsibility will be to train with the board. Depending on the position you are aiming for, such as the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Team Leader, or Team Coordinator, your tasks can include, but are not limited to:

- Chair / Vice-Chair trainee: Learn how to arrange board meetings, prepare meeting agendas.

- Secretary trainee: Learn how to write up minutes of meetings, streamline our external communication channels.

Treasurer trainee: Learn how to process reimbursement claims, review budgets for events, help create the annual financial overview.

- Team coordinator trainee:Learn how to manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the team with the rest of the organisation, offer support, and advice.

Example of a week in the life of a board trainee:

- Learn how to use our platforms e.g. Use Doodle to schedule meetings, process tasks on Trello, find documents in our Google Drive, etc (20 minutes)

- Learn about our internal processes, e.g. depending on which board position you’d like to take, reviewing previous meeting minutes and prepare new agendas, understanding budget proposals, etc (30 minutes)

- Attend board and team meetings to get familiarised with organisation (60 minutes)

Length of appointment: There is a one-month trial period where you can explore the different board trainee tracks and get familiarised with the organisation. You are expected to attend meetings during this time and be proactive in terms of exploring what the organisation can offer you in terms of the different positions available. After the trial month ends you will discuss and set personal and professional expectations and goals with a board member.

Time commitment: On average 1-2 hours a week, days are flexible.

Qualifications:

- You are proficient in English.

- You do not necessarily have specific board or management skills but are willing to learn.

- You value clear and active communication concerning problem solving and delegation.

- You are proactive about matters of administration, communication, and efficiency.

- You are interested in coordination and leadership, from facilitating interactions between the teams, to encouraging participatory, democratic processes.

- You are interested in learning how to use different business communication and lean management platforms, such as Slack and Trello.

Compensation: This is a volunteer position. As a non-profit, we rely on donations to run our organisation and organise our events. We offer remuneration for expenses made on behalf of Leiden Pride, but at this time we can not offer any further financial compensation.

About Leiden Pride

Objective
- Bringing together the LGBTQI+ community;
- Positively contributing to the enrichment and diversity of the LGBTQI+ community;
- Promoting the safety and integration of members of the LGBTQI+ community in The Netherlands and elsewhere in the world.

Core activity
To achieve these goals we organise — among other things — social and educative events, both in-person and online. From lectures to parties, from movie nights to workshops. When we say “community” we are, of course, talking about the community in Leiden, but certainly also outside of it. Among our regular attendees we have people from many other places within and without the Netherlands.
