Detailed description
About the Hague Volunteer Lifeguard Brigade
The Hague Volunteer Lifeguard Brigade (HVRB) has more than 400 members and is an association where volunteers aged 16 and over are trained in a safe and professional environment to become lifeguards, instructors, coordinators, or board members. During the summer months, over 125 HVRB lifeguards play a crucial role—working closely with the Haaglanden Safety Region—in ensuring the safety of visitors on The Hague’s 11-kilometre-long beach. Volunteers are entrusted with great responsibility from an early age, not only on the beach but also behind the scenes in the organisation. This makes the HVRB a unique training ground where members can continue to develop their skills.
In addition, the HVRB is the leading knowledge institute in The Hague in the field of water safety and lifesaving. Founded in 1915, the association has a rich history and a strong reputation. Professionalism goes hand in hand with a close-knit and sporting club culture.
We are looking for a new Treasurer
Our work matters. To ensure the continuity and further development of the HVRB, we are looking for a Treasurer who will safeguard a solid financial foundation. Someone who keeps oversight, recognises opportunities, and organises our finances in a clear and transparent manner.
The Treasurer is more than just the keeper of the accounts: you are the Board’s financial sparring partner and contribute to the long-term vision of our association. You make the impact of our work visible through clear reports, budgets, and advice, enabling the Board to make the right decisions together.
Challenges
The HVRB has ambitious goals: growing from 125 to 200 active lifeguards, further professionalising our internal organisation, and strengthening cooperation with our partners. All of this requires robust financial management. From grant applications to optimising processes, from budgets to accountability: your role as Treasurer is indispensable.
Your Role
As Treasurer, you are responsible for the financial policy and management of the HVRB. You work closely with the Chair and other Board members and are part of the Executive Board.
Your responsibilities include:
- Drawing up the annual budget and monitoring its execution;
- Preparing financial reports;
- Producing the annual accounts, including accountability to the General Assembly;
- Managing the funds, assets, and property of the HVRB;
- Providing financial advice to the Board and committees;
- Developing and improving financial and administrative procedures;
- Communicating financial matters clearly and understandably to the Board and members.
Your Profile
We are looking for a Treasurer who:
- Shares our motivation to contribute—on a voluntary basis—to water safety on The Hague’s beaches;
- Has financial insight and preferably experience in accounting and/or financial management;
- Is analytically strong and able to translate financial information clearly to the Board and members;
- Works carefully, reliably, and transparently;
- Has at least higher professional (HBO) working and thinking level;
- Is a confident communicator;
- Has managerial or governance experience (preferred);
- Is a member of the HVRB or willing to become one.
What We Offer
As Treasurer of the HVRB, you will take on a responsible and socially relevant role. In addition to a modest volunteer allowance, this position offers:
- A financially healthy association;
- A key position within a close-knit, complementary, and ambitious Board;
- The opportunity to contribute directly to the safety of visitors to The Hague’s beaches and to deliver social value for the city;
- Scope to further develop your governance experience and financial skills;
- A role within an association with a rich history and a broad network in The Hague.
Interested?
Are you the Treasurer we are looking for? Please send your application, including CV and cover letter, no later than 26 October 2025 to [email protected]. The selection committee will invite suitable candidates for an introductory interview. Following a positive recommendation by the Board, a vote will take place at the General Assembly. Board members are elected for a three-year term, with the possibility of up to three re-elections.
Providing a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) is part of the procedure.
