Tetyana Benzeroual, Project Lead of Volunteer The Hague and Den Haag Doet at PEP Den Haag, was part of an expert panel for Episode #05: Solving the Housing Crisis & How to Survive Dutch Winters of the Expaterience talk show on November 22, 2025. Nuthan Manohar, the Expaterience host for the segment about how to survive Dutch winters, revealed that she joined the Expaterience team after attending a Volunteer The Hague volunteer fair and that she can really attest to the benefits of volunteering. Together with her four guests, she discusses the challenges faced by internationals who are dealing with their first few Dutch winters. Together they share clear and easy to implement recommendations on how to adjust to, and even embrace, Dutch winters with their rainy days with limited daylight. Tetyana talks about how volunteering during the darker months is a great way to feel better, by meeting new people and focusing on tasks and causes that motivate you. Tetyana explains that Volunteer The Hague serves as a bridge between local organizations and internationals in the greater The Hague area. This connection helps internationals find their way in the Netherlands and make it their new home. Volunteer The Hague’s data shows that engagement on their online platform hits a low in the summer and that it is at its highest in September. When volunteers have children and come back from their summer holiday break, they realize that the new academic year is about to start, and they wonder how to occupy their time if they are not employed. Most of international volunteers are internationals looking to fill a gap on their CVs while looking for a job. If they are not looking for a new job, they want to do something to give back to the community. They want to engage more with the local community and practice their language skills. People volunteer for many reasons, but for the majority of volunteers they just want to be useful. When daytime gets shorter, especially in October and November, people want to engage and not only stay at home and only interact with their family. Show host, Nuthan Manohar adds that research demonstrates that people who volunteer are happier, mentally more resilient and even more resilient to diseases, with a sweet spot of 3 hours of volunteering a week. She states that she was impressed by the high variety of showcased organizations and volunteer roles at VTH events. She comments that sometimes at work you don’t get to work on things that you really care about whereas when you volunteer you do. Tetyana illustrates how Volunteer The Hague provides a platform for organizations looking for volunteers, for example when Expaterience was launched and needed volunteers. VTH helped them think about the volunteer vacancies they could create. A number of volunteers applied online and at one of their in-person events they recruited volunteers to make the concept of Expaterience a dream come true. She names another example by saying that recently the international film festival took place in The Hague and all their 20 volunteers were found through the Volunteer The Hague platform. Tetyana encourages internationals to check out the VHT website at www.volunteerthehague as vacancies regularly get filled but get replaced by others. Once people apply, they should follow up and call the organizations, just like for a job search. An interview will take place, as even volunteer roles can be a competitive process. International volunteers are always surprised to be invited to meetings and organization events and that their opinions are listened to. You have applied to a volunteer vacancy and are now invited for an interview by the organization of your choice. How can you prepare for this conversation so that their expectations become clear and that you can assess whether the role is suitable for you? Whether your interview is online or at the non-profit premises, expect the same dress code as for a regular Dutch job interview. Unless you are applying for a board position, you are not expected to wear a suit. The Dutch use the following expression about volunteer work (vrij means free in Dutch) with the word free , it is "vrijwillig maar niet vrijblijvend." This means that it is voluntary unpaid work, but it does require commitment and a sense of responsibility. They cannot assist their participants without reliable and competent volunteers. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the organization’s mission, which should be published on their website. Visit their social media accounts. Non-profit websites can be outdated, so you are more likely to find out their latest campaigns and programmes on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn. A recent picture on their account may inspire you to ask a relevant question during the interview and gauge the amount of ‘gezelligheid’ (conviviality) during their events. The volunteer manager will tell you all about their mission and the tasks you would perform but they will also expect you to ask some questions. If they state that this role involves 4 hours of your time per month, you could inquire whether this would be on a set day during the week, or at the weekend or in the evening. Finding out what a typical volunteer shift looks like for a volunteer in this role will help you imagine yourself in the role and decide whether it is for you. You might also be curious about who is going to be supervising you and supporting you. It is also normal to ask whether they cover travel costs for certain activities. If you want to have a general impact on the organization you can also ask what their most urgent needs are and what challenges they face right now, this way you can connect them if you know of others who may have some resources, expertise or funds that could help the organization thrive beyond your particular role. In a nutshell, treat your volunteer role interview seriously, find out about the tasks and necessary availability, the organization’s culture and if you are convinced this is a good match demonstrate that you are ready to be an asset and an ally to your interviewer. As an international here in the Netherlands, have you ever run into cultural and bureaucratic hurdles for which you wish you’d been more prepared? Based on our own personal experiences, we’re guessing the answer is probably yes. But never fear, because there is help out there! For over 30 years, Access has been getting important information and resources out to expats in order to help them build successful, happy lives here in the Netherlands. As a Dutch nonprofit organization, you may sometimes wonder what kind of volunteer opportunities the volunteers registered with Volunteer The Hague are looking for and how best to approach them. In order to pin that down, we should realize that there are two types of volunteers: There is the volunteer with a focus on contributing to a specific good cause by helping others - the place-based volunteer - and there is the volunteer who tends to focus on gaining experience, networking, and building professional skills – the skills-based volunteer. Volunteer The Hague’s main target group consists of international millennials (those between 20 and 35 years old) that are the perfect candidates for skill-based volunteering. Just as most volunteers, they wish to give back to the community and feel good about their impact on a good cause. But they also see volunteering as a stepping stone to a successful career. Volunteering helps them polish up their CV and the networking could open up doors to future paid jobs. Why not use this knowledge to tie them to your nonprofit? Some tips on how to recruit international millennials for your organization: • remember that they are looking for skill-based volunteering rather than place-based volunteering; • provide them with opportunities in which they can grow their network and at the same time make an impact; • once recruited, show them your appreciation by offering them support, training and/or a reference letter. Volunteering offers internationals an opportunity to improve their Dutch and a way to get a taste of Dutch culture. Recent research has shown that even though we live in a multi-cultural community using many words originating from the English language, Dutch is still the dominant language (source: nrc.nl). All the more reason for internationals to learn more Dutch by volunteering! On 5 June 2023, Volunteer The Hague Project Manager Tetyana Benzeroual sat down with Professor Lucas Meijs for a wide-ranging interview on volunteer culture in the Netherlands, how internationals living here can make the most of their time volunteering, and the interesting concept of "hyphen volunteering." The transcript of that conversation can be found below. Lucas Meijs is a professor of “Strategic Philanthropy” at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Erasmus University. His current research focuses on issues related to strategic philanthropy, volunteer/non-profit management, corporate community involvement, voluntary energy as a natural resource, and involved learning (life-long development by volunteering). Professor Meijs has been an appointed member of the Raad voor Maatschappelijke Ontwikkeling, the official policy advisory body for the Dutch government and parliament. He regularly publishes on management issues in the philanthropic sector, as well as on volunteer work. He served two terms as the first non-American co-editor in chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Quarterly, the academic journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). Tetyana Benzeroual: What are the benefits of volunteering for internationals in The Netherlands? Lucas Meijs: Volunteering is a very easy way to get connected with new people. We usually think about volunteering as a long term commitment - that you go every week to the same place. But there are many more short term options too! Especially these are very nice if you want to connect to your neighborhood. For example, you could participate in a monthly volunteering activity for a few hours and discover new and interesting places in The Netherlands while meeting new people. I like to tell my students that volunteering brings you places where you usually would not end up going. It might be a place you never thought of going to, like a food bank, but it's good to experience it occasionally and reflect on it. Next time, you could participate in organizing a big barbecue for kids in the neighborhood, which can be a fun and rewarding experience. So it's important to think about creating a "hyphen volunteering," where you gain something from the experience. It's not transactional but rather finding a win-win situation. It could be as simple as enjoying good weather or exploring a new part of the city. It's about looking for ways to make volunteering align with your interests and comfort zone. Sometimes you might push the boundaries a bit, but if you're doing it with friends or even a group of strangers, it becomes more fun. T.B.: Could you please tell us more about what you mean by the term “hyphen volunteering”? L.M.: When it comes to hyphen volunteering, what I mean is that volunteering connects to something in your agenda; in other words, it builds on to the activities and commitments you already have. In the U.S., for example, there are organizations like "Single Volunteers of DC," where people combine dating with volunteering. So, if dating is already part of your regular activities, you can make it an icebreaker by volunteering together. Family volunteering is another option, where you involve your friends or family in the volunteering experience. Think about connecting volunteering to existing plans or interests. [So] instead of seeing volunteering as something added to my already busy agenda, you can ask yourself, "What am I already busy with and how can I connect volunteering to it?" For example, there's a concept called "plogging," where you combine jogging or running with cleaning up your neighborhood. It's about finding ways to integrate volunteering into your already busy agenda. T.B.: We've observed that our audience of international volunteers can be divided into two categories: Those who are already employed and those who are searching for work. How can volunteering benefit these two groups? L.M.: For those who are already employed, volunteering offers an easy way to get out of their working bubble, to step outside of their work environment. It allows them to break free from their routine and engage with a wider community. We have a notable example of a Japanese organization in Rotterdam that was thrilled to support very local philanthropic causes because it gave their employees a chance to connect with people outside their business level. So let's use volunteering to make this a real multilevel international experience. If the working individuals only confine themselves to their own bubble, their international experience becomes superficial in place of a more authentic and meaningful international journey. For those who are unemployed, the role of volunteering differs slightly. Here, volunteering can serve three purposes. Firstly, it offers an opportunity to meet new people who can help with job searching. Try meeting new people, as many as possible. We call this the network function. Engaging in volunteer work that allows you to interact with a diverse network can lead to potential job connections. Secondly, volunteering helps individuals explore various sectors and gain insights into the job market in the Netherlands. By volunteering in different areas such as sports, healthcare, or working with children, they can assess which field aligns best with their interests and skills. We call it the experimental function. The third benefit is skills development. We call it "functional volunteering." Unemployed individuals can use volunteering to sharpen their abilities in a specific area. For instance, if someone has expertise in sports or a related degree, they can search for a weekly volunteering position in a community sports center to demonstrate their capabilities to potential Dutch employers. Combined volunteering offers a "signal function," which shows employers that the prospective employee, engaged with a relevant volunteer role, possesses the necessary skills and commitment. So, the whole combination into the signal function can greatly benefit those seeking employment. Experimenting with different opportunities, understanding what suits them, showcasing their skills through volunteering, and making connections can help them secure suitable employment. It's important to remember that even if a volunteering experience reveals a strong personal dislike for a certain activity, it's still a successful outcome. Being able to determine what doesn't work for you is just as valuable as finding something that does. Ultimately, it's about gaining self-awareness and making progress in your life journey. T.B.: How is volunteering in The Netherlands different from other countries? L.M.: Hmm, I think what is important here is that internationals do not compare volunteering as they know it from their own countries to The Netherlands and instead think of an activity they enjoy greatly. Once they know what makes them happy, then they can try to find this activity in the volunteer environment. There are volunteers driving at primary schools and sports associations, volunteers cleaning up all kinds of places, painting houses, collecting for the food bank, and cooking for vulnerable individuals. Whatever you think is a paid job, you most likely can find someone doing it unpaid as a volunteer in The Netherlands. Of course, correct training is expected as, for example, one cannot drive a car as a volunteer without a driver's license. Neither can this person drive a car for a paid position without proper licensing. In former communist counties, for example, volunteering is perceived by the older generation as forced, whereas the new generation sees it in a similar way as Western people do. If you come from The Netherlands, Belgium, or the Northern states, you see volunteering as active belonging to a community rather than just unpaid labor. They see volunteering as a team effort and an opportunity to build connections within a group. It's not just about doing work; it's about being part of a community. Americans see volunteering more as unpaid work and a slot filling in an assembly line where volunteers are replaced by other volunteers in line. In The Netherlands, we see volunteering much more as a team that builds together a car. But getting into the (Dutch) team is a bit of a struggle. To use an understatement. T.B.: This probably explains why internationals need to interview for volunteer positions, which comes as a surprise to many of them. L.M.: In the States, volunteers will be interviewed to assess if they can do the tasks. The difference with The Netherlands is that the main purpose of the interview is to assess if volunteers fit within the team. In fact, volunteers in The Netherlands are not expected to perform the same task over and over again. They become valuable members of the team who can take up their own projects and steer the course of their volunteer organization. This can make it challenging for internationals to integrate into volunteering activities, as they need to fit into the existing team dynamics. However, once they become part of the team, volunteering in The Netherlands offers flexibility and variety in terms of tasks and activities. T.B.: Any last words of wisdom for our international volunteers? L.M.: For international volunteers seeking positions, it's important to consider that they have the opportunity to become integral members of the organization and something bigger. This aligns well with the desire for learning and belonging that many internationals seek. Volunteering can help them find that sense of belonging within a specific group or organization. It doesn't necessarily require a weekly commitment, as once you become part of the team, there is flexibility in how often you contribute. It can be on a monthly or intermittent basis, depending on the volunteer's availability and preferences. Ultimately, volunteering offers the chance to find your sense of belonging and connect with a community that resonates with your interests and values. It's a valuable opportunity to be part of something meaningful and contribute to a greater collective. T.B.: Thank you for sharing your insights and expertise on volunteering in the Netherlands!

Every year, on June 20th, the global community honours the resilience and bravery of individuals who have been forced to leave their homelands due to war or fear of persecution. The designated theme for World Refugee Day in 2023 is "hope away from home," emphasising the influential force of inclusion and the pursuit of viable solutions for refugees. By embracing an inclusive approach, we aspire to create a world where refugees are always welcomed and integrated. By incorporating refugees into the communities that have provided them safety following their escape from armed conflict and persecution, we facilitate their successful reestablishment and empower them to make valuable contributions to their host nations. This approach proves to be the most effective way to assist refugees in rebuilding their lives and allowing them to actively participate in their new societies. The challenges faced by Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands are an example of the real-life implications of World Refugee Day's theme of inclusion. Among Ukrainian refugees, there are many highly skilled individuals who are eager to actively integrate into Dutch society. However, due to their status under the EU Temporary Protection Directive, they are currently unable to access integration courses, hindering their ability to systematically learn the Dutch language and culture, unlike legally recognised refugees. This limitation not only poses difficulties for their integration but also creates obstacles in finding employment or volunteer opportunities. As non-profit organisations in The Hague, you have a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact by actively engaging Ukrainian refugees as volunteers. By providing them with meaningful volunteer opportunities, you not only enable them to utilise their skills and expertise but also offer them a platform to connect with the local community, build relationships, and improve their language proficiency. Hiring Ukrainian refugees gets you proactive, dedicated, and enthusiastic members on board. They are highly skilled and have lots of experience, and can offer fresh perspectives, which can only enrich your organisation. “We have experience, time, and passion to be useful to Dutch society, and we would like to be more integrated into the community. If you have interesting tasks for us, we are here to help” Alena, Kyiv Furthermore, by incorporating Ukrainian refugees as volunteers, you provide them with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and references within the Dutch context. This experience can greatly enhance their future employment prospects, as it demonstrates their ability to adapt, collaborate, and contribute effectively within the local community. By actively embracing and involving Ukrainian refugees as volunteers, your non-profit organisation can make a significant difference in their lives, while simultaneously enriching your own work. Together, we can foster a stronger and more inclusive community in The Hague, where the talents and aspirations of Ukrainian refugees are recognised, valued, and utilised to their fullest potential. “Refugees want opportunities, not handouts. Our friends at The Hague International Centre are launching a European "Benchmark Study on International Talent" in order to become better at attracting, retaining and matching international talent with the skills needs of various companies. The Why: Global competition on high-skilled talent is leveling up every year, and many companies and organizations feel that they can’t fill vacant positions, which inhibits growth. Many high-skilled international Masters and Ph.D. students wish to stay in their host countries after graduation, but in the end only a minority do, which is a big lost opportunity for the host country. This European benchmark study seeks to improve services to local internationals in order to make our region more attractive and a better home for everyone! The study also seeks to learn about internationals in different markets in order to develop comparable insights on the satisfaction level of the target group, which is Bachelor and Masters students, PhDs, and high-skilled workers. The study will include a ranking of decision-making factors, main reasons for arriving to and staying in a country to pursue career opportunities, and will also explore challenges for employers when it comes to attracting, receiving, and retaining international talents. Becoming an independent language speaker can be very beneficial for both your personal and professional development. But whether you are at a beginner’s or an intermediate level, speaking Dutch can be challenging - or not! Keep reading to find out more about increasing your confidence and improving your language skills with these six simple steps to becoming a confident Dutch speaker! 1. Let go of perfectionism When communicating with a native speaker in their own language, we often tend to be more self-conscious, overthinking every word we say. However, speaking a foreign language is not a grammar puzzle, it’s the freedom to express yourself and dive deeper in another culture. Therefore, instead of focusing on minor language mistakes, try letting go and just be present in the conversation. After all, being heard and understood is of higher importance than using the correct plural form of a word, right? So, if you want to feel and sound more natural when speaking Dutch, try allowing yourself to make mistakes and be kind to yourself. Give yourself a little tap on the shoulder every time you have a conversation in Dutch. When in doubt, here is something to remember – accents and language imperfections can be charming, just look at Queen Maxima! 2. Dare to speak more often You are now one step closer to speaking Dutch with confidence. Now try doing it more often. When you go to your local supermarket, try to speak in Dutch and be persistent, even if the cashier responds in English. Tip: say ‘Ik ben Nederlands aan het leren’ to show that you want to practice speaking Dutch, you will see that people are very eager to help you after that! Although most people in the Netherlands speak English, do not be tempted to stay in your comfort zone, because then you will remain on the sidelines. By speaking Dutch, you immediately cut some of the distance and engage in a more personal communication with the locals. Thus, dare to speak more often! Try lending a book from the library and promise yourself to only communicate in Dutch. Go to a new city and ask for directions. Next time you are in a restaurant, try ordering your food in Dutch. The more you put yourself in situations where you speak the language, the easier it will get. 3. Embrace Dutch small talk ‘’Over koetjes en kalfjes praten’’ means “having small-talk” and it is something they enjoy greatly. It is also one more opportunity for you to practice and learn Dutch in real life. Next time you see your neighbor, try asking him how his weekend was or if he is enjoying his new car. When you pick your child from school, try talking to the other parents in Dutch. You will be surprised how rewarding it can be, especially when you start receiving responses only in Dutch. If you are not sure how to approach someone, a strong conversation starter is ‘’Lekker weertje hè’’. Just make sure you only say it on a sunny day, otherwise you risk being called ‘’zo gek als een deur’’ which is the Dutch way of calling you crazy (by comparing you to a door). Nevertheless, that is an additional advantage of embracing small talk in Dutch – you can learn phrases you would not hear in a traditional language course. 4. Deepen the conversation Now that you dare to speak more often, it’s time to step it up. Next time you go out for drinks with your colleagues, try to engage in the conversation and share your perspective, in Dutch of course. You will notice that when you speak about a topic you are passionate about or as a discussion intensifies, you get carried away and almost forget you are speaking in another language. Moreover, by voicing your opinion in Dutch, you also increase your chance of forming a closer relationship with your peers – the Dutch appreciate your effort to learn their language. 5. Do volunteer work in Dutch! Volunteering is a great way to practice Dutch! This way, besides practicing the language, you get all sorts of other benefits, such as developing other skills, broadening your network, building your resume, getting to know the local culture, and of course, doing something good for the world! And, since you are volunteering, it is a more relaxed environment to practice than let’s say a high-pressure job! When you start volunteering, it is very important to speak Dutch from day 1 and let everyone know you are there to practice Dutch, because once people are used to speaking English to you, it is very hard to switch back! 6. Visit the Dutch language café in the Hague A great place to practice your Dutch with native speakers and meet fellow expats is the Dutch Language Café in the Hague . It is a community-based organization that focuses on learning a language through speaking it while engaging in fun activities. For example, every Wednesday is a games night, where you can enjoy a wide range of board games. If you are up for the challenge of playing scrabble in Dutch or practicing your small talk skills during a game of Monopoly, you can find more about this and other events on the café’s website. The environment is very friendly and encouraging and the atmosphere at the café is always welcoming and cozy. Therefore, make sure you leave your books at home and visit the café, have some fun and be ready to impress yourself with your own Dutch skills. And lastly, it is a great place to volunteer! They have all sorts of volunteer positions where you can also practice Dutch in a very informal, relaxed and safe space! As the Dutch would say ‘’Niet geschoten is altijd mis’’ – If you try something and fail, that’s unfortunate. But if you never try something at all, it’s even worse.

Sintvoorieder1 and Volunteer The Hague to Collect Gifts for Low-Income Families, Refugees and Children in Need For internationals in the Netherlands, there are no doubt many Dutch holiday traditions that may be new to you, such as chocolate name letters and delicious kruidnoten! But perhaps the most beloved Dutch holiday tradition for adults and kids alike is Sinterklaasavond (Sinterklaas Evening)! This event, which happens every year on December 5, is a day when the hearts of many little children will beat faster while waiting for special holiday gifts. But unfortunately, there are thousands of children from low income families receiving assistance, as well as children who live in shelters, refugee locations, who miss out on gifts during this time of year. This is why we're so excited to tell you about Sintvoorieder1, an organization committed to bringing joy to the hearts of these children during this festive time of year. Each December, Sintvoorieder1 strives to give children growing up in visible and invisible poverty a Sinterklaas gift. Their yearly goal is to provide as many children as possible between the ages of 0 and 18 with a new or near-new Sinterklaas gift worth around 10€. But this is a mission they can't accomplish without help. So for this, Sintvoorieder1's 11th year, we at Volunteer The Hague, along with PEP Den Haag, are also helping to collect gifts for these wonderful children by serving as a drop off point for donations! If you're interested in answering this call for gift donations, we are available to receive gifts every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 8:30 and 16:30 before 1 December 2022. Volunteering can be a smart way to help you ease into the job market and provide you with the necessary support network. Many job seekers do not realize the value of volunteering for building relationships, extending their network and discovering new career opportunities. It might seem as their skills are not needed in volunteer work, or any time they spend volunteering takes away time that could be used for job seeking. Taking time out of your own life to help others is a sure-fire way to impress prospective employers and challenge yourself too. It’s often the case that once you display your passion for the organisation and its mission, and have demonstrated your abilities, you’ll earn strong consideration when a paying position opens up that can benefit from your talents. The Volunteer The Hague team is thrilled to announce that we will be partnering with The Hague Humanity Hub for their annual Just Peace Month ! The theme for this year's event is "Hope in Times of Adversity," and will kick off on 21 September and conclude on 24 October. With The Hague being the city of peace and justice, Just Peace Month aims to highlight peace advocacy and peace initiatives through this monthlong program of events and activities. There are many types of events in the works, including the "Party for Peace" on 22 September, a Career and Talent networking event on 7 October, and an "Open Day" on 16 October, where local peace and justice organizations will highlight their missions and current projects. There are also panels and workshop planned, and several events still in the works! As the coordinator of Just Peace Month, The Hague Humanity Hub is partnering with several local organizations for a variety of purposes, including for running events and for event promotions. As part of our partnership, VTH has opened up our volunteer platform and database to The Hague Humanity Hub and its Just Peace Month partner organizations. This means that you should expect to see many more volunteer opportunities from peace advocacy NGOs and other local organizations working on peace and justice initiatives! We'll keep you updated as more events are scheduled for Just Peace Month. After more than two years of cancelled or online-only events, it's been great to see the annual social and professional events we know and love finally make a comeback. And we're so excited to announce that one of our favorite local events, The Hague Online's Feel at Home Fair, is making a comeback in 2022 as well! Taking place this year on 6 November, this fun and informative daylong event is geared towards internationals living in The Hague region, and brings together local organizations and businesses for a day of networking, entertainment, and information exchange. The organizations include sports, community, and cultural clubs that will showcase themselves to the local international community. The fair will also include performances and workshops, a kid’s corner, and plenty of networking and socializing space. There will be some changes with the Feel at Home Fair this year: First, the talented events team at The Hague International Centre will be taking over the logistics of the event. While the team at The Hague Online has run this event successfully for over ten years, the organizers want to safeguard the event for the future by integrating it into The International Centre's year-round event agenda, thus helping the event reach a wider audience. Second is a venue change: While the event has been held at The Hague City Hall for the last several years, in the coming years The Hague International Centre will hold the fair at various community-driven locations. This year the fair will be held at the British School in the Netherlands, Junior School Vlaskamp campus. The Volunteer The Hague team has had our own booth at this event every year since our inception, and we're excited to say that this year will be no different! The program is still being decided, but previous fairs have also seen the VTH team running panels and workshops as well. We'll keep you updated about the fair and our planned involvement as we get more information. Volunteer The Hague (VTH) is a powerful and unique tool: for the non-profit organizations in The Hague to reach the volunteer community among internationals/expats, and for internationals/expats to find suitable volunteer work and thus make a positive contribution to society. In fact, VTH is the biggest online English-language platform in the Netherlands where the local Dutch non-profit organizations that are open to internationals/expats as a potential voluntary target group and internationals/expats volunteers can find each other. In a nutshell, VTH provides a space on www.volunteerthehague.nl for the local Dutch non-profit organizations to list local volunteer opportunities that do not require Dutch fluency. Internationals can browse these vacancies or use search options that can match their interests and skill sets with specific opportunities. VTH is also more of a “community” where internationals who want to do volunteer work are linked to social organizations in The Hague. This can be done online via the Volunteer The Hague web platform, and also offline via the Mix & Match Volunteer Job Fairs. This has been yet another successful year for the VTH project despite the global pandemic. 1694 internationals and 140 organization admins registered on VTH website (about 500 internationals/expats more compared to previous years). 3238 unique visitors averaged per month visited VTH website and 65 percent of them were between the ages of 18 and 44 . VTH recorded 29,523 page views per month with an average visit duration of 3:56 minutes . 2140 applications for 352 volunteer jobs and 1036 registrants for 17 community events and workshops uniquely suited for non-Dutch speakers were created and promoted on its website by 155 local Dutch non-profit organizations in The Hague in the year 2021. Volunteer The Hague Project impact infographic – 2021 All the VTH activities from regular workshops to Mix & Match networking events were once agin taken online. In fact, VTH pioneered the online space of The Hague area in October 2020 with the first online fair titled Mix & Match Online Volunteer Job Fair . Shortly after its success, followed the second online fair and two more in 2021. Since 2015, VTH has been organizing the Volunteer The Hague Mix & Match Networking Events every year. The events have been a great success from the start and the interest of internationals is still growing. The Volunteer The Hague Mix & Match Networking Events aim to increase mutual involvement between internationals/expats who want to do volunteer work and civil society organizations in The Hague that are looking for volunteers. In this way, internationals/expats are offered the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the city through volunteer work. The events create an opportunity for social organizations to meet potential volunteers face-to-face and fill their volunteer vacancies. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, local non-profit organizations were still in need of volunteers in 2021. At the same time, they had limited resources to search for them and had less personal contact with potential volunteers. Internationals/expats who could volunteer also needed personal interaction. Due to the lockdowns, that has largely disappeared. VTH was proactive and able to offer the Mix & Match events online and gave both the Internationals/expats and The Hague social organizations an opportunity to meet face-to-face and to meet their volunteer needs.The total of 384 participants and 30 local Dutch non-profit organisations looking for international volunteer help attended the fairs in 2021. 88.5% of the participating prospective volunteers respondended to the post-event survey rating events as “Very Good” and “Good”. 81% reported that they are “Very interested” and “Interested” to do some volunteer work based on the information they received at the fairs. The entire 100% of the responded organisations reported that they are “Very likely” and “Likely” to take on board new volunteers based on the interactions they had at the fairs. Both, organisations and volunteers that participated in these events, reported a strong community feeling and formed long lasting bonds so needed during the lockdown of global pandemic. VTH is a powerful and unique tool that allows the municipality of The Hague to reach the non-Dutch speaking volunteer community and to drive an increase of organisational and volunteer involvement where internationals have the opportunity to find suitable volunteering and as a result make a positive impact in our community. The team at Volunteer The Hague has been horrified to see the tragedy and injustice that are currently unfolding in Ukraine due to Russia's unprovoked attacks. We know that a lot of people in our expat community who have a strong spirit of volunteering and a passion for good works may be looking for ways to help. So here is a list of groups and individuals we've found over the last couple of days who are committed to getting aid to Ukraine. Note: We will update this list with the date that we post them as we learn about more resources. As a disclaimer, these are resources the VTH team has found online and we have done our best to ensure that they are legitimate avenues for assistance to Ukraine. However, it's always a good idea to do your own vetting before you donate any money or goods to a charitable cause, because there are always a few bad apples who wish to take advantage of crises like the one in Ukraine, and we don't want to see anyone in our community get taken advantage of. Here are the resources we have found: 11 March 2022: Orphan Feeding Foundation is an organization legally based in the Netherlands since 2011 and has supported many initiatives for children over the years in Belgium, Romania, Nepal, Kenya, and several other locations. Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they have been raising money through their networks to help Ukrainians and have been working together with both the Embassy of Ukraine here in the Netherlands and Stichting Oekrainers. Orphan Feeding Foundation is also organizing a transfer of refugees from Przemysl, Ukraine to the Netherlands by bus via Poland. They can help 54 Ukrainian mothers and their children. If you are (or know) a Ukrainian mother who needs to evacuate, please pre-register with one of their representatives, Dorota, via +31641337805. 1 March 2022: The Association of Ukrainians in The Netherlands is running a goods collection drive with multiple collection points around the country, including in Den Haag and Rotterdam. Here is a list of needed goods as well as the addresses of the collection points: Local expat Marysia Ozga is also graciously running a collection drive for good to be sent to the Poland/Ukraine border for incoming refugees. The donations are being collected at a location in Rijswijk (Veraartlaan 8, 2nd Floor) and are being taken to the border in minivans by volunteers. Goods such as pain killers, diapers, sanitary items, and blankets (among many others) are very much appreciated. We mentioned in our last news article that March is "The Hague Welcome Month" for our friends at The Hague International Centre, where they will be running a number of events for expats geared towards getting settled post-arrival. Now we're happy to report that THIC has also put out a brand new digital guide titled, "Welcome to The Hague." This comprehensive, 100-page guide has a wealth of essential information for everyone in our expat community who wants to truly get settled into life here in The Hague region! At Volunteer The Hague, we've done our very best to keep our database of volunteer opportunities organized, up-to-date, and easily searchable! Based on a lot of feedback from our fellow internationals, we've improved the functionality of our database over the years in many ways: Over the years, we've added settings so that listings can be searched by type of organization, required skills, and even location within The Hague region. Now we're adding another way you can find your perfect volunteer opportunity: Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs! SDGs (also known as Global Goals) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all," according to a 2017 Resolution by the United Nations. The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the UN General Assembly as part of their "Agenda 2030" initiative, with the hope that these goals can largely be achieved by participating nations by the year 2030. (You can find a complete list of SDGs below.) Given that this is a global initiative with important and laudable goals for all of us, we've added functionality to our website that organizes volunteer listings by SDG! Are the goals of Climate Action or No Poverty important to you? Then you can search listings by those SDGs to find volunteer opportunities that match what's important to you! And if you're simply browsing our listings, you can now see what SDGs a particular listing or organization is targeting. We hope this added functionality will help you more easily find opportunities and organizations that align with your personal goals and values and make your time volunteering even more meaningful. We encourage you all to give it a try! One point of feedback that we at Volunteer The Hague often hear from internationals is that they’re happy that our service exists because it’s often hard to find casual or short-term volunteer opportunities. We also hear that many internationals don’t know which organizations to reach out to, or what volunteer work is like here in The Netherlands. This is why we’re excited to promote NLDoet, the largest volunteer campaign in The Netherlands! Together with hundreds of organizations in the country, NLDoet will be putting on this event for all potential volunteers and organizations in the country, and there will be plenty of opportunities right here in The Hague! This year, due to the corona situation NLDoet is postponed to Friday 28 and Saturday 29 May (in place of 12 and 13 March). NLDoet is a great opportunity to dip your toe in the water, as it were: Using the NLDoet website, you sign up for small, short-term opportunities that will allow you to get a taste of local volunteer activities without a huge commitment. This is great for those of you who want to volunteer but have limited time, and for those of you who want to have some “trial” opportunities in order to gauge what activities you might be most suited for. And for organizations, registering with and participating in NLDoet can help you connect with potential volunteers, get a few extra helping hands for a job that needs doing, and increase brand awareness for your organization and its mission. In addition to practical jobs, organizations can also utilize NLDoet in order to organize a festive day for those that you serve – something that is much easier to achieve with the extra hands provided by NLDoet! You can find information about this on NLDoet’s website, and PEP is also available to help advise you about this free of charge. NLDoet is organized by Oranje Fonds, the largest national social fund in The Netherlands. Unfortunately last year it got canceled due to the corona situation, but during the year before's two-day event, over 9,000 jobs were done during this event by over 350,000 people! Oranje Fonds expects this number to be even higher this year. No matter your age, talent, background, or nationality, everyone can come together to help make a difference in the lives of others and in our communities. Calling all recent expats to The Hague region! Our friends at The Hague International Centre would love to hear from you! They are looking for internationals to join an online conversation as part of their research to make their services better for you and others in our wonderful expat community. In this focus group session, you'll be asked about your experiences in relocating to The Hague: What went smoothly? What difficulties did you encounter? What can THIC do to make things easier for you? This online focus group session will take place on Monday, 31 January at 18:00 and is meant for expats who have been in The Hague for a maximum of three years. Our friends at The Hague International Centre work to help as many people feel at home in The Hague region as possible! To support this mission, they are organizing monthly webinars that offer information and advice on how to make your move to The Hague region go smoothly. These webinars will be held twice-monthly and will be presented by one of their expert team member. Subjects will include a wide variety of topics, including essential government formalities, finding a new home, finding the right (international) school, taxes, healthcare, medical insurance, and much more! The webinars will have two time slots: the second Monday of the month in the evening (17:30-18:30) and the third Wednesday of the month in the morning (11:00-12:00), with the hope that these time slots will make it easier for people to join in who have not yet made their move to the Netherlands. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and transformed almost every industry, field, and activity imaginable in our society, including essential volunteering and charitable activities. At Volunteer The Hague, we’ve seen firsthand the pandemic’s adverse impact on both nonprofit organizations and our community’s devoted volunteers. This is especially problematic, because in addition to everything else the pandemic has disrupted, it has also exacerbated social and economic inequalities, and this often affects the most vulnerable in our society. We all have some familiarity with the effects on the education sector, such as teacher shortages, reduced study time for students, and funding issues. Similarly, other fields have also suffered shortages in staff and in funding, including elderly care, social work (in particular, work with the homeless), animal care, human rights, and charitable giving, among others. But as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and it has been impressive to see how quickly many of these fields have adapted to these changing circumstances by going digital in order to continue their important work. And it has been just as inspiring to see how many volunteers have plugged into this new digital landscape in order to help these organizations continue to fulfill their missions! So what is digital volunteering? Simply put, it is any volunteering activity that one can do from the comfort of their own home using an internet connection and their phones or laptops. What is less clear is the impact: How is it that one can effectively help others when being face-to-face isn’t possible? In truth, before last year it was also hard for us to imagine. But over the last 18 months, we’ve seen a flood of digital volunteer opportunities posted on our website by dozens of organizations in The Hague region and we’re here to tell you definitively: You can still make a difference! What are some examples? One of our favorites was an opportunity from earlier this year from a local elderly care home that was seeking a volunteer conversation buddy for some of their elderly residents. But to maintain safety and social distancing, these conversations happened on Zoom! This was a great way to help these elderly residents not feel so alone during the pandemic while at the same time helping them get involved with the digital revolution we’re all experiencing. And there have been many other types of digital opportunities: volunteer project manager opportunities for nonprofits and NGOs, online teaching opportunities, translation and interpretation tasks, graphic design and communications, and even online fitness lessons for kids and adults! Just as it has become possible for many of us to work from home when we never would have imagined that possibility two short years ago, it is absolutely feasible – and even easy – to continue engaging in volunteer activities digitally for both safety and convenience. It’s also worth noting that digital volunteering can still provide all the benefits of in-person volunteering, such as being able to gain job skills when you are between jobs, beefing up your resume, expanding your social circles, and networking. Finally, digital volunteering can also allow those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to volunteer (due to time or transportation constraints, for example) to get involved! Whether you regularly engage in volunteer activities or are just curious about getting involved in this new digital volunteering revolution, we encourage you to take a look at the Volunteer The Hague website so you can explore what may be out there for you. We have hundreds of volunteer opportunities in English listed from organizations all over The Hague region who are eager to work with internationals – in person and digitally. We hope you’ll check them out so you can get involved in your local communities, even from the comfort of your own homes!

Come and meet local volunteer organizations during "Together for Loosduinen" event on Saturday 13 November! Together for Loosduinen On Saturday 13 November from 13.00 – 16.00 there is a fun and varied program at Ockenburgh for interested residents of Loosduinen and the volunteers of the various Loosduin organizations. The program – Meeting and Inspiration You are welcome on the beautiful grounds of Villa Ockenburgh. If you have never been, this is already worth it! You are welcome from 13:00. Alderman Hilbert Bredemeijer opens at 13:30 the event in the greenhouse. From 14:00, the various organizations will give a short pitch. At different locations: fun sports and games activities. In the courtyard you will see nice colorful stalls, where you can get acquainted with the different organizations. The stall is also located here to pick up the free Goodie bag. Various organizations are also present in the building next door (called the Foyer). But you can also do a nice workshop Art and Painting. And a live broadcast of Zorgradio is going on. And there are performances by the Willy Caron Muziektheater. In the Theaterzaal there will be a Vlogging Workshop by Michel Rogier from 14:00 to 15:00. There are also two fun workshops with music from Popradar. There are also all kinds of sports and games activities on the sports field next door. And of course you can participate in the Jeu de Boules, and get to know the Shooting Club and the animals of the Nijkamphoeve. Are you an interested resident of Loosduinen? Then come! You can get acquainted with the various social organizations from Loosduinen. Let yourself be surprised and inspired. It's nice to know what's going on in your neighborhood. But this cannot be done without volunteers. Many of the organizations would not exist without volunteers. Think of the many sports clubs, scouting, residents' organizations, culture, etc.

ICAP - the International Community Advisory Panel - which has been doing community surveys over the past few years, providing insights FROM the community for municipal authorities among others. ICAP is finalising the results of thier Education survey whcih took place just before the summer, and have recently launched a new one: asking if people feel at home in the Netherlands. While they are beyond delighted that in less that a week they already have more than 3,000 (!) responses, more means they can also get a clearer idea as to where the challenges lie in our international community. ICAP’s current survey would like to know if the international community feels that they are part of Dutch society and what they think is important when it comes to feeling at home. How easy did you find it to make friends and find your way around? Is learning Dutch important and have you ever faced discrimination because you are foreign? All these issues come on board in the survey, which will take about 10 minutes to complete.

During the small-scale Walking Tours, participants can meet some of the people who work making the concepts of justice and peace a reality.

Team The Hague, a group of women joining forces to organize a Walk to Fight Cancer in our beloved The Hague city. Their aim is to raise money for cancer research and prevention via the foundation Love Life. Fight Cancer, supporting KWF Dutch Cancer Society. You can participate! Calling all expat parents! On the whole, The Netherlands is a great place to live for expats, but as with anything, there's always room for improvement. The International Community Advisory Panel , established in 2016 to challenge misperceptions and increase knowledge about the international community in the Netherlands, focuses on issues of particular interest to expats, including housing, healthcare, diversity, and education. They're currently conducting a survey of local expat parents who have children in school in order to add to their research and come up with action items to advocate on behalf of our community. What are your experiences of the education system, local or international? Do you have suggestions about how to make it better for expats here in The Netherlands? And how do you feel about our local schools' response to the pandemic? Make your voice heard and participate in their survey! It just takes a few minutes and can help a lot of people in the future! On 14 March (and for the 7th year in a row!) Volunteer The Hague once again enthusiastically participated in The Hague Online's Feel at Home International Community Fair! Every year, this fun and informative event brings together local internationals with businesses, service organizations, and activity groups of every type imaginable with one goal in mind: making those of us from other lands who now live in The Netherlands "feel at home!" This is one of our favorite events - not only because we tend to run workshops and panels showcasing the work we do, but also because it give us the opportunity to meet directly with the international community that we serve. And despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the show went on as planned thanks to The Hague Online's hard work in putting together a wonderful online program of virtual panels, workshops, and information booths. Despite the limitations, things really went off without a hitch; we were not only able to offer an informative panel on volunteering, we also participated in the fair's Work & Career Program and were also able to chat directly with attendees in our very own virtual booth! Our panel titled " No Dutch? No Problem - Volunteer! " was hosted by VTH's very own project manager Tetyana Benzoural. Tetyana was joined by Deborah Valentine, executive director of Access , as well as local professional speaker Cathy Delhante, who also founded one of our favorite local organizations, Wool for Warmth . Together, they discussed the importance of internationals stepping up to volunteer here in the Netherlands, as well as the many benefits - not only the benefits for our local community, but also for the international volunteers themselves. Later in the program, Tetyana was also joined by Ali Ayoub and Rodica Malancea, two local internationals with extensive volunteering experience here in The Netherlands. They answered questions about volunteering and spoke about the many fringe benefits they gained during their time as volunteers at various organizations - from expanding their support networks, broadening their CV and job skills, and giving back to causes they care about in the community. There were some great conversations during this panel, so for those of you who weren't able to make the fair, we hope you'll take a look at the video of the full program, which you can find below. We want to thank Deborah, Cathy, Ali, and Rodica, as well as all of those who attended the fair and joined us in our virtual booth! We had a fantastic time once again this year, and we're very much looking forward to participating again in 2022!

Last week, VTH project manager Tetyana Benzoural sat down for an interview with DutchbuzZ, The Hague's very own expat-focused media station, as part of their "The Hague Pearls" segment. This segment focuses on individuals who are making positive contributions to our local international community. Tetyana and DutchbuzZ founder Lily-Anne Stroobach of course discussed Volunteer The Hague's mission of connecting internationals looking to volunteer with organizations eager to work with local internationals. But during their conversation they also delved into some other important topics, including volunteer culture in The Netherlands, reasons that people want to volunteer, and the special challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has created for our community.
